We are saddled with talk about breastfeeding being a mother’s right, and that’s absolutely true. However, where I live, while it’s acknowledged as as right, it honestly feels like more of a privilege. I wanted to make sure that privilege is acknowledged before adding posts about the huge amounts of work that went into my breastfeeding success.
I am extremely lucky to have a supportive partner, a full maternity leave, health care with breastfeeding support, a car to get me to appointments, the ability to purchase pumping supplies, a supportive work environment, lactation rooms in every building at work, and so much more. Without all of the things available to me, I absolutely see why breastfeeding is a huge stressor, not possible, or not successful for a huge portion of the population.
So if you follow along with this blog and find yourself in a “If I had X then breastfeeding would have been easier/possible for longer, etc.” know that I am with you and fully understand the privilege I have experienced.
